Pumpkin Spiced Eggnog

Ho Ho Ho and a bottle of rum, more specifically Cruzan Black Strap rum! The Pumpkin Spiced Eggnog is a really tasty cocktail that will definitely put you in the Holiday mood… especially after two or three of these babies. The best part is that it’s super easy to make. So get on your ugly holiday sweater and put on some X-mas music (may I suggest the Frank Sinatra and Glee X-mas albums) and let’s make one!

1) Let’s get our tools together. We will need our Boston Shaker, a Hawthorne Strainer, a Jigger with a 1 oz and a .5 oz measure, and a Irish Coffee mug or a 10-12 collins glass. Our shopping list will be Cruzan Black Strap Rum, Hiram Walker Pumpkin Spice liqueur and the Eggnog of your choice. I recommend the Southern Comfort Vanilla or the Lactaid Brands. The Lactaid brand still has the flavor, texture and richness of the full on dairy versions without being too heavy on the calories and will not upset anyone’s stomach. We will also be using a cinnamon and nutmeg blend to sprinkle on top.

2) Get out the mixing glass (the Robin to the Batman of the Boston Shaker) and our jigger and get 1.5 oz of Cruzan Black Strap rum in the glass. Pronounced Kru-zhin (not Kru-Zan), is named after the people of St. Croix. The Cruzan people. I love this rum, lots of flavor, vanilla, burnt caramel, molasses and spice all over the place. Great in Tiki style cocktails and wherever you want those fun rummy flavors. If you want to punch up the vanilla flavors feel free to sub Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum. Also, if you are having a “fun” Holiday and the in-laws are driving you nuts, feel free to up the rum a .5 oz measure.

3) Next up, we will be adding our 1 oz measure of Hiram Walkers Pumpkin Spice liqueur. This is a fun seasonal liqueur that has a sweet pumpkin flavor with the cinnamon, nutmeg and other spices on the back end. Also look for Bols Pumpkin Smash as an acceptable substitute. Less spice notes in the Pumpkin Smash though.

4) Now, we will get our 5 oz of Eggnog in the glass, add our ice and shake. We don’t need to go all Tom Cruisey in Cocktail on this one, just enough to get our spirits well mixed, our temperature cold and create a little froth on top.

5) Slap the Hawthorne strainer on to the mixing tin and strain into our always chilled glass. Garnish with a sprinkle of our cinnamon and nutmeg blend. Enjoy! Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Diwali, Happy Kick the Crap Out of Xenu Day, Happy Robanakah, Happy Festivus, Happy Life Day (where my Star Wars people at?). I wouldn’t forget my Muslim brothers and sisters during the holidays so I’ll post a fun non alcoholic version below 🙂 Happy Holidays Everyone!

For my Non-Alcoholic version we will utilize the same steps as listed above except we will be using 2 oz of pumpkin spice puree and go 6 oz of Eggnog. To make our puree, get a can of pumpkin, 2 teaspoons each of cinnamon and nutmeg, and some Caramel Syrup (Torani or Starbucks will do). Add all contents to a blender on high speed. Viola, your puree. Now with the drink itself, give it a good shake and strain well because you don’t want any lumps from the puree. Texture good, lumps bad 🙂
