Amaretto Sour

by Raul Faria

Amaretto Sour is the 9th cocktail in our mission to recreate all the cocktails in the book “the Joy of Mixology” by Gary “Gaz” Regan. Now I’m sure you’re thinking to yourself “Umm Amaretto Sour? Lemme guess, Amaretto and Sour mix right?” Well, yes and no. This cocktail is easy for sure but its actually just Amaretto, fresh lemon juice and a good shake. No bottled sour mix or god help you, sour mix from a gun. This is actually a sexy little cocktail that starts with sweet almond and ends with a mouthwateringly tart finish. I’m sure even the hot guy in the Disaronno ads that annoyingly shows you how to make overly simplistic cocktails while flashing his dreamy grin would be surprised how different this cocktail tastes when made the proper way. Let’s make one:)

1) Lets get our tools together; we are going to need our Boston Shaker, a Hawthorne Strainer, a citrus press a jigger with a 1 oz measure and a rocks or Old Fashioned glass. Optional tool, a Double-Strainer. Our shopping list will be Amaretto, Lemons, Oranges and Maraschino Cherries.

2) So let’s begin by pouring 1 oz of fresh lemon juice into our mixing glass. Cut your lemons in half, squeeze them with our citrus press and measure the juice. This should be prepared ahead of time as well but can be done on the fly if need be. You can also run it through a double strainer to remove any pulp or seeds.

3) Next up add 2 oz of Amaretto into our mixing glass. I usually stick to Disaronno, I dig the flavor as it is lush and not overly sweet for an Amaretto.

4) Add ice and Shake! Strain into our iced rocks glass. Garnish with a half orange wheel and a Maraschino cherry. Enjoy
